ORPCA Autocross Program
With continuous growth over the past five years, we can safely say that our Autocross program has arrived. We currently have an average of over 40 Porsche drivers entered at each event, and we allow other makes in just to keep things interesting. Autocross is the best way we can think of to teach Porsche drivers the handling and braking basics in a controlled environment. Whether you are a seasoned driver that needs a brush-up, or a novice with a desire to improve basic driving techniques, we can help. Need coaching or instruction? There are several skilled drivers that form our instructor base. They are happy to help, be it a casual question, a short dissertation, or some instructional “seat time”. This is a no charge item available to all drivers at our events.
What is an Autocross?
An autocross is a (relatively) slow speed timed event, where a solo driver competes against the clock on a course marked out with a set of orange cones. The course is designed by experienced autocrossers to provide opportunities to improve your driving and car handling skills, and to test the cornering, braking, and performance limits of you and your car. The course is laid out in a large, open "parking lot", speeds are kept down, generally below 50MPH, with a lot of the critical action in first or second gear and at very low speeds. There is an excellent tutorial on the PCA national website.
Requirements
A helmet and a safe car are the only special equipment needed. Anyone with a valid drivers license can participate. Participants from 16 to 18 years old require parental permission and parent must be present at the event.
How do I get in on the action?
Just come on down to PIR. Each participant typically gets 5-6 timed runs each. Arrive at PIR by 7:00am to check in or register and walk the course prior to our 8:30am drivers meeting. Track crossing for events in the Pro Pits is at the Start/Finish line midway down the PIR front straight, and is closed from 9:00am until we are done.
What to bring: Helmet* (2000 or 2005 SA or M rated); bottled water; and a jacket.
*Limited Loaner Helmets Available
