ORIENTATION

Welcome First-Timers!

If this is your first time joining our flagship NW Passage tour, this short orientation meeting will introduce you to the rich history and unique character of our 5-day, 1,000-mile June road trip.

Expect a much more immersive experience than our standard ORPCA half-day drives around the greater Portland area, as we’ll be covering significantly more ground each day. To ensure everyone enjoys the sweeping roads at their own pace, we divide the tour into two main driving groups: “Sporty” and “Leisurely.”

While you’ll start with your main group, you’ll find that smaller driving “pods” will naturally form by themselves after the first few miles as drivers settle into a shared rhythm. You won’t be driving continuously for hours on end, though—all of these pods will reconvene at designated rest stops roughly every 45 minutes to stretch, swap stories, and regroup.

Finally, we’ll walk you through how to read and utilize the driving directions in your tour book, which is absolutely essential for navigating the route smoothly.

Digital Navigation

Navigating with RideWithGPS

To make navigating our journey as seamless as possible, we are hosting a session dedicated to our supported digital navigation app, RideWithGPS (available for iOS and Android). We’ve set up the entire NW Passage as a single “Event” within the app, which comes preloaded with every daily driving route. This digital tool is a fantastic way to augment the written driving directions in your tour book. Don’t worry if you aren’t tech-savvy—we will provide handy cheat sheets, personally help you install the app on your device, and walk you through a live demonstration!

Saturday, June 20th, 2026

Saturday is officially “Navigator’s Day Off”!

Whether you want to keep the wheels rolling or take a break to stretch your legs, we have a couple of fantastic activities to choose from.

If you are in the mood for a relaxed cruise, you can join an easy, scenic drive further south to Fort Bragg and Mendocino for lunch, returning via a slightly different route.

Alternatively, we are offering an exclusive, guided hike through the spectacular Rockefeller Forest on Saturday, June 20th. Led by a private naturalist guide, this roughly 3-hour hike explores the Rockefeller Loop and Bull Creek Flat trails at the base of the majestic 10,000-acre forest. As the largest remaining contiguous old-growth coastal redwood forest in the world, it features some of the tallest and oldest trees on earth. The immense canopy combined with a relatively open understory creates a truly exhilarating, fairy-tale environment.

Guided Hike Details:

Tickets: Must be purchased in advance during registration

Cost: $21 per person

Capacity: Maximum 16 attendees per hike

Morning Hike: Starts at 10:00 am

Afternoon Hike: Starts at 1:15 pm

The drive to Rockefeller Loop from the Benbow Inn is ~ 29 miles. The routes to and back will be in the Tour Book

Saturday, June 20th, 2026

DRIVE INTO NW CALIFORNIA

No Navigator required.

This is a non-guided drive. Navigation and direction will be in the App and the Tour Book.

You can leave at any time and drive at your own pace.

The morning drive to Fort Bragg is ~99 Miles. If you like to visit Mendocino, its a short drive of 10 miles to the south.

The afternoon drive from Fort Bragg back to the Benbow Inn is 80 Miles.

The routes will be in the Tour Book.

Laying the Groundwork for 2026 Events

October is one of my favorite months. I enjoy the warm, muted colors of autumn, the slanted rays of sunlight before the Pacific Northwest slips into its grey winter coat. For me, it’s also a time of reflection about the months that have passed and a welcome phase of routine before the winter holidays. Even though there is routine and less travel, planning for the coming year is in full swing. As you probably know, Q4 is when the Club starts laying the groundwork for events in the coming year.

Although the Board will meet and strategize and outline events for 2026, this is a member-led Club. I would like to solicit your input and feedback. Please drop me an email or give me a call with your thoughts about what worked this year, as well as what didn’t. The goal is improvement! What can we tweak, what can be improved? Your constructive criticism is welcome, but remember, we are all volunteers, so please be gentle.

The 65th Year of ORPCA has been great! There have been 58 drives so far, two perfect runnings of Northwest Passage, and two new multi-day tours (Snake & Bake and Scenic Oregon). Road and Fork, the smaller social gatherings at various ethnic restaurants, have been added and are very popular. We added more special interest drives in the summer, more ladies’ drives, a pride drive, and turned up en masse at more local cars and coffee events. In brief, we were out and about and seen in more places than ever.

We would like to keep the momentum going for 2026. In order to do that, volunteers are needed and welcome. If you have an idea for an event or would like to give a little time to the Club, please contact me. Being part of the backbone of an event is very satisfying. Organizing, helping and volunteering don’t always put you at the forefront, but rather allows you to see the benefit of your efforts through the smiles on others faces.

Let’s drive 2026 together! Contact me with your ideas and tweaks.
