About Us

HISTORY OF THE PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA AND OF THE OREGON REGION PCA

Bill Scholar’s first Porsche was a 1953 356 Coupe. Partly out of frustration at having no organization to turn to with questions about the car, he invited a small group or Porsche owners to his home on February 5, 1955. They made plans to get together from time to time throughout the remainder of that year to do what Porsche pushers do best- talk about, look at, work on, drive, etc.- their cars. They finally decided to form a club in September, 1955, and the first official meeting of the Porsche Club of America was held at Blackie’s Grill in Alexandria, Virginia. Bill Scholar was elected as its first President by the 12 individuals in attendance. The original 12 became 64, and also became the Potomac Region. As membership grew, new regions began forming all across the United States. The annual PCA meetings, “known as a Parade”, are hosted by a different region each year. The Oregon Region hosted Parades in 1980 and 1995 and 2006.

The Oregon Region Porsche Club of America (ORPCA) was born as a result of splitting off from what was then known as the Washington Region (now known as the Pacific Northwest Region). On July 24, 1960, the Oregon Region’s first meeting was held at the Lake Grove home of Mr. and Mrs. Dolph Trachi. There were 32 members. The first organized event was a Concours d’Elegance held on September 25, 1960. September also marked the first appearance of the Anzeiger, the Region’s newsletter.

The Oregon Region celebrated its 50th Anniversary in September 2010.

Our 60th Anniversary was planned to be celebrated in 2020, but this celebration had to be postponed until 2021 due to Covid. In 2021 we celebrated the anniversary with a special members event and car display.

In 2025 we celebrated our 65th Anniversary with a big summers party at Stoller Vineyard, a leading winery in Williamette Valley, with more than 150 members attending. 80 of the attending members joined one of four drives leading to the winery. In2025 we had over 1,000 members and co-members and the club offered a wide variety of 80+ events that year, designed to appeal to a very diverse membership.

Over the years, one thing has remained constant, “enthusiasm for the marque and pride in the enthusiasts themselves”.

Driving Positive Change — ORPCA Community Outreach

We love the roads we drive. The scenic backroads, the mountain passes, the coastal highways — and the communities that make them worth traveling. In 2025, we formalized something that felt like a natural extension of who we are as a club: a commitment to give back to the communities we pass through, not just drive through.

Our Community Outreach Program connects ORPCA with the people, organizations, and institutions across the Oregon Region — from local schools and colleges to community organizations and beyond. We believe that a great car club isn’t just about what happens on the road. It’s about the relationships we build along the way.

What we’re working toward:

  • Engaging with local schools and colleges to inspire the next generation of automotive enthusiasts
  • Partnering with community organizations in the regions we drive through
  • Representing the Porsche brand and the ORPCA community with pride and purpose
  • Creating meaningful connections that go beyond the cars

This is a program that grows with the involvement of our members. Whether you have a community connection worth exploring, an organization you’d like us to engage with, or simply a passion for making a difference — we’d love to hear from you.

Interested in getting involved or have an idea to share? Reach out to our Community Outreach Committee — every great initiative starts with one conversation.

The PCA Zone 6 has 11 regions, 3 in Canada and 8 in the US. The Zone is represented by Bred Pape.

Laying the Groundwork for 2026 Events

October is one of my favorite months. I enjoy the warm, muted colors of autumn, the slanted rays of sunlight before the Pacific Northwest slips into its grey winter coat. For me, it’s also a time of reflection about the months that have passed and a welcome phase of routine before the winter holidays. Even though there is routine and less travel, planning for the coming year is in full swing. As you probably know, Q4 is when the Club starts laying the groundwork for events in the coming year.

Although the Board will meet and strategize and outline events for 2026, this is a member-led Club. I would like to solicit your input and feedback. Please drop me an email or give me a call with your thoughts about what worked this year, as well as what didn’t. The goal is improvement! What can we tweak, what can be improved? Your constructive criticism is welcome, but remember, we are all volunteers, so please be gentle.

The 65th Year of ORPCA has been great! There have been 58 drives so far, two perfect runnings of Northwest Passage, and two new multi-day tours (Snake & Bake and Scenic Oregon). Road and Fork, the smaller social gatherings at various ethnic restaurants, have been added and are very popular. We added more special interest drives in the summer, more ladies’ drives, a pride drive, and turned up en masse at more local cars and coffee events. In brief, we were out and about and seen in more places than ever.

We would like to keep the momentum going for 2026. In order to do that, volunteers are needed and welcome. If you have an idea for an event or would like to give a little time to the Club, please contact me. Being part of the backbone of an event is very satisfying. Organizing, helping and volunteering don’t always put you at the forefront, but rather allows you to see the benefit of your efforts through the smiles on others faces.

Let’s drive 2026 together! Contact me with your ideas and tweaks.
