What do I need to do to be a qualified participant in the ORPCA Autocross Program?

  • Your car will need to pass a Tech Inspection. Every event offers Tech Inspections before we begin racing. For all the Tech Inspection information go to: Tech Inspection info. Note: Your helmet is part of this inspection, so be sure it is a 2015 or newer SA or M Snell rated helmet.
  • You will need to have a unique number for your car. See “Car Numbers” below.
  • You will need to class your vehicle. An overview of the Porsche classes can be found in the section below called “Classing Your Porsche”.  For details on the classing of Porsches and Non-Porsches go to:  Car Classification Details
  • If you drive you will need to work. We run in 2 groups – one drives while the other works to monitor the course for the drivers. More information on working at Autocross can be found at the bottom of this page.

Rules & Regulations

HOW CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS ARE AWARDED – OVERVIEW

Points are awarded as follows:

  • 10 points for first place in class,
  • 8 for second place,
  • 7 for third and so on.


These points are dependent on the number of cars in the run group.

Changing classes during the season is discouraged. Points cannot be moved from class to class. The only exception is if you drive in a lower classed car, you can run in a higher class for points in that higher class.

The season consists of 8 events, however, only 7 count toward a championship trophy. If you run all 8 events your lowest score will be dropped. You must run at least 5 events to qualify for a trophy. 

CAR NUMBERS

When you register for an Autocross event, you will be asked to select a car number. All one and two digit numbers are reserved for ORPCA/PCA members only. If you do not have a previously approved number you can put in a number — if you cannot select it, that means it is already taken. Keep trying until you find a number you can select. This number is your official car number for the event and remainder of the season. Be sure to get your official number at your first autocross before you invest in magnetic or stick-on ones.

In order to run in Autocross, car numbers must be displayed on BOTH sides of your vehicle BELOW the window line. Numbers must be a minimum of 8-inches tall, in a color that contrasts with the paint. The numbers must be highly visible so that they are easily read. Numbers with tape on windshields or side windows are NOT ACCEPTABLE.

The Starter will not permit cars with inadequate numbers to drive the course. Special auto-body-shop tape is available by ORPCA in multiple colors. This tape will not damage auto paint. Choose the color that best contrasts with your car color. Bring a cloth to dry your doors before applying tape on rainy days. Magnetic numbers are readily available online. We recommend individual numbers for flexibility if you participate in other events.

CLASSING YOUR PORSCHE

There are four Porsche categories of classes – Vintage, Showroom Stock, Production, Improved and Modified. Categories are related to automobile configuration.

The Vintage Stock (V) category contains classes of cars that are stock and prepared Vintage. This includes all 356, 912, 914, 924, 911 built between 1965-1983.

The Showroom Stock (S) category contains classes of automobiles as normally delivered and specified for use in the United States and Canada. Factory options as normally available for a specific model year are permitted. Certain factory and/or dealer installed equipment/ options will move an automobile out of S and into Production or higher.

The Production (P) category contains automobiles (as normally delivered to the United States and Canadian public through authorized sales outlets of the manufacturer) plus others with limited performance-affecting changes from stock. R compound tires move a car into the Production category.

The Improved (I) category contains automobiles with more substantial performance-affecting changes from standard (stock) specification, whether changed by the factory, dealer or owner. These modifications have defined limits.

The Modified (M) category contains automobiles that have performance-affecting modifications outside of the limits of the Improved category and for race automobiles (factory-built or otherwise).

If your car classing changes during the season, you must notify the Event Coordinators. In addition, your championship points at the end of the year will reflect the highest classification that you ran during the course of the season.

OTHER RULES AND SAFETY INFORMATION

  • Failure to make a complete stop in the proper area (where marked), if required, after a timed run will result in a DNF.
  • Drivers must obey flag signals or risk being removed from the event and/or disqualification.
    Green – Go. The course is clear.
    Red – Emergency. Pull over and stop safely.
  • The track worthiness of the automobile competing in the autocross is the responsibility of the entrant(s). The safety inspection form must be complete to compete in the autocross.   • If you are a Novice or a first timer with our group, we highly recommend using an instructor for your first Autocross run. After that, it is up to you if you prefer to have an instructor or not. Instructors will be available to everyone whether you are a novice or seasoned driver.

CONE PENALTIES

  • If a cone is toppled, there is a 2-second penalty for each cone.
  • If a cone is still standing but it has been moved completely out of its box, there is a 2-second penalty. Note: If a cone has been hit but remains standing and is at least partially inside its box, there is no penalty.
  • Cones hit before the start or after the finish count as penalties.

WORKING AT AUTOCROSS

If you want to drive Autocross, you have to work. While one run group is driving, the other group works the course. It is appreciated if everyone helps tear down the course when Autocross is over. If you have a schedule issue and MUST drive in the early session but cannot stay to work your assigned session, you MUST advise an autocross chair at check-in or the drivers’ meeting. Failure to do so will result in a DNW (Did Not Work) and void all run times and any championship points for the event. Multiple offenses will result in disqualification from future ORPCA events. LOGIN HELP

  • For your first login, you need to set your password
  • Click the “LOGIN” button
  • A window opens asking for your username and password. Don’t enter anything, but click “Lost your password?” (the blue text below the Login button)
  • A window will open asking you for your email address to receive a link for setting a new password. Please use the same email you used for your PCA registration.
  • After clicking Submit, check your emails for a Password Reset email from ORPCA.
  • Open the email and follow the link. Another window opens asking you for a new password. After entering your new password  click Submit.
  • Go back to the Join Us! page (Home Page > ORPCA > Join Us!)
  • Click the LOGIN button. The login window will appear. Please enter your email (the same you used for the PCA registration) and your password, then click Submit.
  • After a few seconds you will be logged in. On the top right of the screen you will see a Welcome message with your First Name and “(PCA Member)”
  • The Join Us! site will now show a welcome message and options to join PCA, read about the ORPCA membership benefits and a button for contacting  our Membership Chair if you encountered any issues or need help.

Maintaining Momentum

Summer may not officially be here, but it sure feels like it! The sun has been shining several days in row, shiny cars are everywhere, Cabrios and Targas are running top down, and the ORPCA calendar is bursting at the seams with drives and summer driving adventures. As we approach the second half of the year, it is hard to believe how many events we have planned and executed so far, but the upcoming summer and fall promise even more. Our premiere events of Northwest Passage and Scenic Oregon are up soon and no doubt they will bring spectacular driving. The Pride Drive is new on our calendar but already is receiving enthusiasm. The annual summer picnic this year will highlight our 65th Anniversary celebrations. Tickets for that event will go on sale sometime in June with the event set for Sunday, August 17th. Watch your weekly email for updates. It feels early to be thinking about fall and winter, but there may be some surprise events. I won’t dangle too much, but new venues and adventures are in the works. Our ongoing events continue to fill up and that makes me both happy and anxious. Like other long-time members, I remember the days of simply showing up for a drive without checking the website two months in advance for opening dates and registration times. Life in general has changed and keeping an eye on our social feeds and personal interest groups is very electronic and woven into our daily on-line existence. The Club’s web and social media team are critical to the running of this organization. Our website, Instagram feed, and weekly emails are vital communication tools for the club. I am thankful every day for the people behind the scenes that bring our drives, dinners, tours, and logistics to life in the virtual world. We’re only halfway through the year, but those people working in the web, social media, internet, and email realm have already crafted much of the behind-the-scenes material for the remainder of the year and the events still in planning. Thank you, Jeannine, Heinz, Julie, David, Carlos, and all members who tag us, post about us, and share pictures and stories online. Thank you all for keeping this party rolling!
