Arrive and Drive

September 10, 2016, 8:45am

Enjoy some of the best roads with the monthly Arrive and Drive. Each drive is roughly 60 to 100 miles in length and finishing in under three hours. It is a great way to kick off the weekend and a fun way for new members to get acquainted with ORPCA! We leave from our north location at Shari’s Restaurant at 9730 N. Whitaker Rd. Portland, OR 97217. Take the PIR I-5 exit and head east to Whitaker, and proceed 1/4 mi. and Shari’s restaurant will be on your left; 503-289-2351. Many arrive early at 8:00am for a no-host breakfast.

To attend, bring your favorite Porsche ( with plenty of fuel ) and ideally, a navigator; we meet no later than 8:45am in the rear parking lot. With an average of 40 to 50 cars, we often try to break into smaller groups rather than doing one long convoy. Driver’s meeting takes place at 9:00am, the first group of cars will depart at 9:15am.

WE WILL BE HEADING NORTH INTO WASHINGTON FOR THIS DRIVE

For questions please contact Larry Hannan secretary@oregonpca.org

Arrive and Drive - 5th Annual Sausage Run Plus Optional Tour to Dufur

October 8, 2016 - October 10, 2016, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Arrive and Drive - 5th Annual Sausage Run Plus Optional Tour to Dufur

The 5th Annual Sausage Run with lunch in Mt. Angel at the Glockenspiel Plus “Links”

This is October so think “Oktoberfest!” – sausages, schnitzel, and beer….   Ja!

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to provide club members enjoyable driving experiences in their Porsches. We are adding to the October Arrive and Drive “Sausage Run” by including an optional 2 night stay at the historic Balch Hotel in Dufur, Oregon. The plan is that all club members can enjoy participation in the October Sausage Run, and after lunch, the 18 cars that have signed up for the overnight extension will depart for Dufur.

Arrive and Drive – 5th Annual Sausage Run, October 8, 8:45am

Notice: This year the Arrive and Drive Sausage Run will start at The End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, 1726 Washington St, Oregon City, OR. Please arrive no later than 8:45am. Driver’s meeting takes place 9:00am. Depending on the group size we will break into 2 groups rather than doing one long convoy. The first group will depart at around 9:15am, the second group at 9:30am. Lunch will be in Mt. Angel at the Glockenspiel.
There is no fee for the morning Arrive and Drive to Mt. Angel.

Dufur “Links” Tour – October 8-9/10

Our tour will run Saturday October 8 and Sunday October 9 with an optional drive on Monday October 10 for those who stay both days. The “Links” Tour will leave from Mt. Angel immediately after the Arrive and Drive lunch. The route to Dufur will be two-lane, paved, country/forest roads taking about 2 ½ hrs. We are staying at the Balch Hotel in Dufur.

Saturday evening there will be a barbeque and Sunday evening will include an appetizer selection with our no-host wine party. We will finalize the costs and details for these 2 meals by September.

On Sunday we will make our way to Oregon Raceway Park for a few parade laps in both directions, and then on to The Dalles for lunch at a brewpub. After lunch we’ll find our way back to the Balch Hotel for appetizers and wine.

The hotel only has 18 rooms so the “Link” extension is limited to 18 cars. Fun drives have been designed for Sunday and Monday. Those that cannot stay over to Monday can depart from our lunch stop on Sunday, however, those that can stay Sunday night will be treated to more of Oregon’s scenic roads. The routes are designed for your driving enjoyment and patterned after Joe Kelly’s mid-week casual drives.

Monday we will have a fun drive through Bakeoven, Shaniko, and Antelope eventually getting to Madras where you will decide on continuing to Sisters for lunch or splitting off on OR26 to Portland.

Registration for the Dufur “Links” Tour:
Checkout the Balch Hotel website at www.balchhotel.com; Please note you cannot make reservations using the website. You must call the hotel (541-467-2277). Let them know that you are with the Porsche Club and make your reservations. Please don’t wait as there are only 18 rooms. Let Joe Kelly know that you have made reservations. (joekelly@earthlink.net or cell phone 562-587-3090, home 503-285-1658).

This is the last ORPCA organized drive of the season – Enjoy it!

Tire Rack Street Survival - Teen Defensive Driving Class

October 9, 2016

Teen survival

TEEN DEFENSIVE DRIVING PROGRAM RETURNS TO PORTLAND!

WHAT: Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Defensive Driving Class
WHERE: Portland International Raceway
WHEN: Sunday October 9, 2016
WHY: IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT DRIVING … IT’S ABOUT LIVING

The leading killer of American teenagers is motor vehicle crashes; for teens aged 16 to 19, 40% of total fatalities in that age bracket stem from driving accidents. Tire Rack Street Survival®, a national driver education program in its eighth year in Oregon, teaches young drivers the skills they need to help them stay alive behind the wheel.

On Sunday, March 8th at Portland International Raceway, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Oregon Region will host a Tire Rack Street Survival® driving school. During this one-day class, students gain valuable new skills to improve their driving techniques on the road. Students drive their own cars through real-world emergency driving exercises, with an instructor in the next seat to provide immediate feedback.

DOES YOUR YOUNG DRIVER KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO A SKID?
The Street Survival program provides students with valuable skills to improve their abilities to respond to a driving emergency. This class is 100% focused on teaching young drivers car control techniques for safer street driving. The class is held at PIR’s large parking paddock — not on the race track. Parents are welcome to observe the drills and listen to the classroom instructor.

LEARN LIFE SAVING DEFENSIVE DRIVING SKILLS FOR $75
Due to the generous sponsorship of the Tire Rack, the SCCA Foundation, the BMW Club of America Foundation, Porsche Club, Enterprise Rental Car, and Michelin Tires – along with local Oregon and Washington racing community volunteers – the total out of pocket cost per student is only $75!

Licensed drivers age 16 – 24 are eligible to participate. Students must supply their own vehicle in safe, running condition, along with proof of insurance, and a valid driver’s license. 15 ½ year old students with valid learning permits and a minimum of 6 months driving experience are also eligible to participate. Note: due to insurance regulations, SUV’s, vans, and trucks participating in this program must be equipped with electronic stability control or have NHTSA 3 Star or better rollover rating.

For more information and to sign up, please visit http://streetsurvival.org and click on the Portland International Raceway Option for October 9. Classes have been filling up earlier and earlier each year, so please sign up soon. We are already 50% filled up (as of the beginning of March) for this October event.
