2016 Driver's Skills Clinic #2 - PIR - South Paddock

August 20, 2016, 07:00 am

REGISTER VIA: EVO Driving School

CLUB CONTACT:

“Motorsport is the universal language spoken by many but only understood by a few.It comes in quite a few dialects whether in a straight line or glued to the apex of a hairpin turn, it’s a language of excitement, bravery, trust, repetition, and will. Those who understand stray from the world of normalcy because pricey is an understatement. Regardless, the friendships you keep and the knowledge you gain has more value than anything you can put in that race car money pit. It’s more to it than just cars, which brings us to autocross and its pl2015 ax fun run peter 11-1ace in all of this.

Is it motorsport? Is it even racing or is it just imitation? You’re just driving around cones for the entire day in a parking lot, not even a track. But you see that’s what sets it apart, what makes it unique, its own language. 60 seconds at most, that restraint becomes your incentive, less than a minute to repetitively excel at the limit but not exceed it, again and again. Precision becomes your best friend because if you murder that cone that’s 2 seconds you’ve unintentionally adopted. That one pylon can be the difference between first and last.

You get to beg your car to forget the restraining days of the week and enjoy the freedom to play.

When you command that car from behind the wheel you attain a heightened appreciation for the addiction of motorsport, a glimpse of what it has to offer, and a passion for what most won’t try to understand. Guess it’s their seconds lost…” (transcript by Kwesi Peters)

Arrive and Drive - 5th Annual Sausage Run +

The Sausage Run plus links!

This is October so think “Oktoberfest!” – sausages, schnitzel, and beer….   Ja!

Lunch in Mt. Angel at the Glockenspiel New Eatery

 LOOKING FORWARD

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to provide club members enjoyable driving experiences in their Porsches. As we look forward to the 2016 Arrive & Drives we are planning to extend the October “Sausage Run” to include an overnight stay in Dufur, Oregon. That overnight will be for Saturday night (Oct 8) and for those that can stay an additional night, Sunday (Oct 9). Lodging will be at the historic Balch Hotel (check their website). The hotel only has 18 rooms so the A/D extension is limited to 18 cars, assuming one or two people per car. The plan is that all club members can enjoy participation in the October “Sausage Run”, and after lunch the 18 cars that have signed up for the overnight extension will depart for Dufur. The route to Dufur will be two-lane, paved, country/forest roads. Fun drives will be designed for Sunday that will allow those that cannot stay over on Sunday night to depart. Those that can stay Sunday night will be treated to more of Oregon’s scenic roads. The routes are being designed and planned for your driving enjoyment. More information will be provided in the upcoming months. If you are interested contact Joe Kelly (joekelly@earthlink.net or cell phone 562-587-3090, home 503-285-1658).

Our A&D will start @ Miller’s Homestead 17333 SW McEwan Ave. Tigard OR 97224  503.684.2831
( I-5 exit 290 head one blk east )

Please arrive no later than 8:45am.

Driver’s meeting takes place 9:00am, but many arrive early @ 8:00am for a no-host breakfast. With large turnouts, we often try to break into smaller groups rather than doing one long convoy. The first group will depart at around 9:15am.

This is a no fee event.

Tire Rack Street Survival - Teen Defensive Driving Class

October 9, 2016

Teen survival

TEEN DEFENSIVE DRIVING PROGRAM RETURNS TO PORTLAND!

WHAT: Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Defensive Driving Class
WHERE: Portland International Raceway
WHEN: Sunday October 9, 2016
WHY: IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT DRIVING … IT’S ABOUT LIVING

The leading killer of American teenagers is motor vehicle crashes; for teens aged 16 to 19, 40% of total fatalities in that age bracket stem from driving accidents. Tire Rack Street Survival®, a national driver education program in its eighth year in Oregon, teaches young drivers the skills they need to help them stay alive behind the wheel.

On Sunday, March 8th at Portland International Raceway, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Oregon Region will host a Tire Rack Street Survival® driving school. During this one-day class, students gain valuable new skills to improve their driving techniques on the road. Students drive their own cars through real-world emergency driving exercises, with an instructor in the next seat to provide immediate feedback.

DOES YOUR YOUNG DRIVER KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO A SKID?
The Street Survival program provides students with valuable skills to improve their abilities to respond to a driving emergency. This class is 100% focused on teaching young drivers car control techniques for safer street driving. The class is held at PIR’s large parking paddock — not on the race track. Parents are welcome to observe the drills and listen to the classroom instructor.

LEARN LIFE SAVING DEFENSIVE DRIVING SKILLS FOR $75
Due to the generous sponsorship of the Tire Rack, the SCCA Foundation, the BMW Club of America Foundation, Porsche Club, Enterprise Rental Car, and Michelin Tires – along with local Oregon and Washington racing community volunteers – the total out of pocket cost per student is only $75!

Licensed drivers age 16 – 24 are eligible to participate. Students must supply their own vehicle in safe, running condition, along with proof of insurance, and a valid driver’s license. 15 ½ year old students with valid learning permits and a minimum of 6 months driving experience are also eligible to participate. Note: due to insurance regulations, SUV’s, vans, and trucks participating in this program must be equipped with electronic stability control or have NHTSA 3 Star or better rollover rating.

For more information and to sign up, please visit http://streetsurvival.org and click on the Portland International Raceway Option for October 9. Classes have been filling up earlier and earlier each year, so please sign up soon. We are already 50% filled up (as of the beginning of March) for this October event.
