AutoCross

Upcoming Autocross Events

Autocross is an exhilarating and fun way to help raise the level of your driving skill
to match the capabilities of your Porsche!

This is a driving exercise, where a single car negotiates a closed course of cones to achieve the quickest time possible.  No previous experience is necessary; Novices are welcome. We cultivate an air of camaraderie and fun among our participants.  All you need is a driver’s license, an automotive helmet (2015 or newer SA or M Snell rated) and a car that can pass a basic mechanical safety inspection. Loaner helmets are available and instructors are available to answer questions and may be able to provide in car instruction depending on the Covid-19 status. Cars are run in classes against cars with similar performance. Bring any older or newer Porsche, including 911s, Boxsters, Caymans, Macans, Panameras, or Cayennes.

Your car will be given a tech inspection to make sure it is safe for autocrossing. Speeds are usually below 50 mph and driving is mostly in second gear.  Each driver generally gets between 6 and 8 runs competing for best time against other cars in their class. At the end of the event, elapsed times are factored for penalties and posted for viewing.

Oregon PCA Autocross

Your ORPCA Autocross team warmly welcomes all newcomers to join us in the pursuit of speed and car control. The ORPCA autocross experience is full of fun, camaraderie and a great way to make new friends. We currently have an average of 25-30 Porsche drivers entered at each event, and other marques are invited to participate. Autocross is a great way to teach Porsche drivers the handling and braking basics in a controlled environment. Whether you are a seasoned driver that needs a brush-up, or a novice with a desire to improve basic driving techniques, autocross may be the event for you. Need coaching or instruction? There are a number of skilled drivers that form our instructor base. They are happy to help with questions you may have. Instructional “seat time” may be offered depending on the Covid-19 restrictions.

Located at Portland International Raceway’s (PIR’s) North or South Paddocks, participation is limited to about 60 participants per event. This allows for a better participant experience and ensures we’re able to efficiently manage the run groups. Please register early if you are interested in participating. Walk-ins will not be accepted and people on the waitlist will be added in order (priority to members) if there are cancellations.

Work assignments are mandatory and will be enforced. It takes volunteers to keep this event going. If you drive, you work………no exceptions. We realize some folks have special circumstances that may prevent them from working in specific roles. We’ll do our best to accommodate you. But we ask that you consider whether the physical aspects of autocross are appropriate given your individual health.

Please read below and check the other sections under the Autocross menu for more information. (Rules and Regulations, Tech Inspection, Car Classification and more)

What to Expect?

  • Arrive at PIR no later than 7:30am. Look for the ORPCA Autocross signs when you enter PIR
  • 7:30 to 8:30am – Our Check-In desk is open. Registered participants must check in at the desk. (Walk-in registrations will not be accepted.) Get your wristband and check your car number, and run group. Course maps will be sent the night before.   Please print and bring to the track.
  • 7:30 to 8:30am – Tech Inspection is open. If you do not have a 2022 Tech Inspection sticker, you must get your car inspected your first event of the season.
  • The course is open for walking when the design committee releases it, generally, around 8:00am
  • 8:45am – Mandatory Driver’s Meeting
  • 9:00am – First car out

What to Bring?

Always dress for the weather. A tarmac can run 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the ambient air temperature and you will be standing for possibly 1 to 2 hours. In the rain, umbrellas and hats are good. If it is below 50 degrees and raining, wear waterproof gear and stay warm. Other general things include:

  • Helmet (2015 or newer SA or M Snell rated) – A limited number of  loaner helmets are available.
  • If you are purchasing a new helmet for the 2022 season, make sure you purchase a 2020 Snell rated one.

What do I need to do to be a qualified participant in the ORPCA Autocross Program?

  • Your car will need to pass a Tech Inspection. Every event offers Tech Inspections before we begin racing. For all the Tech Inspection information go to: Tech Inspection info. Note: Your helmet is part of this inspection, so be sure it is a 2015 or newer SA or M Snell rated helmet.
  • You will need to have a unique number for your car. See “Car Numbers” below.
  • You will need to class your vehicle. An overview of the Porsche classes can be found in the section below called “Classing Your Porsche”.  For details on the classing of Porsches and Non-Porsches go to:  Car Classification Details
  • If you drive you will need to work. We run in 2 groups – one drives while the other works to monitor the course for the drivers. More information on working at Autocross can be found at the bottom of this page.

HOW CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS ARE AWARDED – OVERVIEW

Points are awarded as follows:

  • 10 points for first place in class,
  • 8 for second place,
  • 7 for third and so on.

These points are dependent on the number of cars in the run group.

Changing classes during the season is discouraged. Points cannot be moved from class to class. The only exception is if you drive in a lower classed car, you can run in a higher class for points in that higher class.

The season consists of 8 events, however, only 7 count toward a championship trophy. If you run all 8 events your lowest score will be dropped. You must run at least 5 events to qualify for a trophy.

CAR NUMBERS

When you register for an Autocross event, you will be asked to select a car number. All one and two digit numbers are reserved for ORPCA/PCA members only. If you do not have a previously approved number you can put in a number — if you cannot select it, that means it is already taken. Keep trying until you find a number you can select. This number is your official car number for the event and remainder of the season. Be sure to get your official number at your first autocross before you invest in magnetic or stick-on ones.

In order to run in Autocross, car numbers must be displayed on BOTH sides of your vehicle BELOW the window line. Numbers must be a minimum of 8-inches tall, in a color that contrasts with the paint. The numbers must be highly visible so that they are easily read. Numbers with tape on windshields or side windows are NOT ACCEPTABLE.

The Starter will not permit cars with inadequate numbers to drive the course. Special auto-body-shop tape is available by ORPCA in multiple colors. This tape will not damage auto paint. Choose the color that best contrasts with your car color. Bring a cloth to dry your doors before applying tape on rainy days. Magnetic numbers are readily available online. We recommend individual numbers for flexibility if you participate in other events.

CLASSING YOUR PORSCHE

There are four Porsche categories of classes – Vintage, Showroom Stock, Production, Improved and Modified. Categories are related to automobile configuration.

The Vintage Stock (V) category contains classes of cars that are stock and prepared Vintage. This includes all 356, 912, 914, 924, 911 built between 1965-1983.

The Showroom Stock (S) category contains classes of automobiles as normally delivered and specified for use in the United States and Canada. Factory options as normally available for a specific model year are permitted. Certain factory and/or dealer installed equipment/ options will move an automobile out of S and into Production or higher.

The Production (P) category contains automobiles (as normally delivered to the United States and Canadian public through authorized sales outlets of the manufacturer) plus others with limited performance-affecting changes from stock. R compound tires move a car into the Production category.

The Improved (I) category contains automobiles with more substantial performance-affecting changes from standard (stock) specification, whether changed by the factory, dealer or owner. These modifications have defined limits.

The Modified (M) category contains automobiles that have performance-affecting modifications outside of the limits of the Improved category and for race automobiles (factory-built or otherwise).

For a list of cars and classes with further classification information, please go to: Car Classifications.

If your car classing changes during the season, you must notify the Event Coordinators. In addition, your championship points at the end of the year will reflect the highest classification that you ran during the course of the season.

OTHER RULES AND SAFETY INFORMATION

  • Failure to make a complete stop in the proper area (where marked), if required, after a timed run will result in a DNF.
  • Drivers must obey flag signals or risk being removed from the event and/or disqualification.
Green – Go. The course is clear.
Red – Emergency. Pull over and stop safely.
  • The track worthiness of the automobile competing in the autocross is the responsibility of the entrant(s). The safety inspection form must be complete to compete in the autocross. The inspection form will list all of the items to be inspected. Tech Inspection Information can be found here: Tech Inspection info.
  • If you are a Novice or a first timer with our group, we highly recommend using an instructor for your first Autocross run. After that, it is up to you if you prefer to have an instructor or not. Instructors will be available to everyone whether you are a novice or seasoned driver.

CONE PENALTIES

  • If a cone is toppled, there is a 2-second penalty for each cone.
  • If a cone is still standing but it has been moved completely out of its box, there is a 2-second penalty. Note: If a cone has been hit but remains standing and is at least partially inside its box, there is no penalty.
  • Cones hit before the start or after the finish count as penalties.

WORKING AT AUTOCROSS

If you want to drive Autocross, you have to work. While one run group is driving, the other group works the course. It is appreciated if everyone helps tear down the course when Autocross is over. If you have a schedule issue and MUST drive in the early session but cannot stay to work your assigned session, you MUST advise an autocross chair at check-in or the drivers’ meeting. Failure to do so will result in a DNW (Did Not Work) and void all run times and any championship points for the event. Multiple offenses will result in disqualification from future ORPCA events. Please review our Corner Workers Guide.

A vehicle Tech Inspection is mandatory for all drivers wishing to participate in an ORPCA Autocross event.  Every Autocross event offers a Tech Inspection. If you do not have a 2022 Tech Inspection sticker, please arrive at your first event by 7:30am to get registered and get the Tech Inspection done.

Make sure your helmet is a M/SA2015 or newer helmet.

To determine what changes move cars between V, S, P, I and M classes see the complete PCA classing rules. The complete PCA classing rules can be found in the 2019 PCA Parade Competition Rules:  2019 Parade Competition Rules 1st Edition. Autocross rules are on pages 16-30. The section on Event Size Classing is missing. We use a modified version of the Small Region classifications that were last published in the Parade Competition rules from 2017 on page 28. Please note: There was no Parade Competition Rules for 2020 and the 2021 one will not available until later this spring.

Porsche Classes
Oregon Region PCA Autocross runs under a modified version of the small region rules. Be sure to check the allowed modifications section in the Parade Competition Rules (see link above) if you have made ANY changes (including R tires or larger tire sizes) to your stock vehicle. The intent of the Showroom Stock class (S01, S02, S03, & S04) is to create a class for automobiles as normally delivered and specified for use in the United States and Canada. Factory options as normally delivered for a specific model year are permitted. However, anything beyond this, especially anything that could be reasonably perceived as being performance affecting would not be allowed in Showroom Stock. For example, Automobiles must run with their spare tire, jack, lug wrench, owner’s manual(s), tools, etc. Cars running out of class will not receive Championship Points. If you have questions contact your Autocross Chairman prior to the event at: Autocross Chair

Before coming out to Autocross – please make sure you have reviewed this guide.  Also here as a PDF file: Corner Workers Guide v3

General Rules – Safety First!

  1. Safety is PRIMARY! Never turn your back on the course or a car. Always be alert. There may be two cars on course at the same time.
  2. Prohibited at the corner stations: Cameras, Cell phones, and other similar distractions – if your cell phone is in your pocket – turn it OFF. If you are observed holding a cell phone on the course, you may be asked to leave. The safety of everyone on the course demands your full attention.
  3. Each station will have at least two workers: A Cone-Setter and a Radio Person. The Radio Person needs to be the more experienced person and controls the radio and the red flag.
  4. Talk with adjacent corners and determine which cones or areas each of you will cover.
  5. When more than one Cone-Setter is assigned to a corner, spread them out to effectively cover the area you have agreed to.
  6. Do not sit down, wander from your post, engage in conversation, or get distracted in any way from the action on the course.
  7. Photographers are not allowed on the course without approval and a spotter. If you see someone taking pictures near the course who you think is not approved (no spotter) please ask them to go to the trailer immediately.
  8. Watch for intruders (pedestrians or non-participant vehicles) entering the course area. Flag them away and/or use the radio to call attention (and the red flag if needed).

Cone-Setter Instructions

  1. Watch the cones as the car approaches and as the back of the car passes as it may hit or move the cones at either of these points.
  2. RUN, DON’T WALK when resetting a toppled or moved cone. Also keep track of all cars currently on the course.
  3. Do not put yourself in any danger; do not run for a cone if the 2nd car is fast approaching, or if you cannot safely correct it. The driver has the option of stopping before reaching the downed cone and getting a rerun or going through it and accepting the run as is.
  4. When resetting cones, communicate to the Radio Person any cones which are penalties.

Radio Person Instructions

  1. RADIO USAGE – Hold the button for a second then talk with the radio about 8 inches from your mouth. Do not hold the button if you are not talking.
  2. Hold the flag so that it cannot be mistaken for a warning but in a manner that it can quickly be raised and waved when needed.
  3. Always be looking out for the corner workers at your station. Wave the red flag and radio “Red flag” if any worker is in danger.
  4. Wave the Red Flag vigorously if a safety issue occurs in your area and call “Red Flag” on the radio. If you hear “Red Flag” on the radio, raise and wave your “Red Flag” immediately.
  5. You are responsible to notify the Timer if a penalty has been incurred in your area.
  6. When calling in a penalty – Call in with your Corner #, the Car number and then the Penalty. For example: “Corner 1, Car 51, DNF (missed a gate)” or “Corner 2, Car 64, 2 cones”.

Penalties

  1. If a car goes “off course” by missing a gate, the car gets a “DNF” penalty, or “Did Not Finish” and no time is recorded.
  2. If a cone is down or if it is moved out of the marked area/box for the cone, it is a Cone penalty.

Laying the Groundwork for 2026 Events

October is one of my favorite months. I enjoy the warm, muted colors of autumn, the slanted rays of sunlight before the Pacific Northwest slips into its grey winter coat. For me, it’s also a time of reflection about the months that have passed and a welcome phase of routine before the winter holidays. Even though there is routine and less travel, planning for the coming year is in full swing. As you probably know, Q4 is when the Club starts laying the groundwork for events in the coming year.

Although the Board will meet and strategize and outline events for 2026, this is a member-led Club. I would like to solicit your input and feedback. Please drop me an email or give me a call with your thoughts about what worked this year, as well as what didn’t. The goal is improvement! What can we tweak, what can be improved? Your constructive criticism is welcome, but remember, we are all volunteers, so please be gentle.

The 65th Year of ORPCA has been great! There have been 58 drives so far, two perfect runnings of Northwest Passage, and two new multi-day tours (Snake & Bake and Scenic Oregon). Road and Fork, the smaller social gatherings at various ethnic restaurants, have been added and are very popular. We added more special interest drives in the summer, more ladies’ drives, a pride drive, and turned up en masse at more local cars and coffee events. In brief, we were out and about and seen in more places than ever.

We would like to keep the momentum going for 2026. In order to do that, volunteers are needed and welcome. If you have an idea for an event or would like to give a little time to the Club, please contact me. Being part of the backbone of an event is very satisfying. Organizing, helping and volunteering don’t always put you at the forefront, but rather allows you to see the benefit of your efforts through the smiles on others faces.

Let’s drive 2026 together! Contact me with your ideas and tweaks.

You can reach me at [email protected]
